Hall papers, 1863-1900.

Contains the diaries of E.A. Hall, 1863-1865 when he was in the Union Army. Describes camp life in Maryland, guard duty in Washington, D.C., marches in pursuit of Lee after Gettysburg, the second Wilderness campaign, the attack on Petersburg and a week in Libby Prison. Also letters (some fragmentary), including one from Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia (with a Confederate postal stamp) and souvenirs. There is a typescript of the diaries (made by Elizabeth Greene, 1964-1965). In addition there are newspaper clippings of articles written by James Marshall Hall and the pocket dictionary he carried in the Civil War.
